the law of supply states that other things being equal, the supply of a commodity extends with a rise in price and contracts with a fall in price. there are however a few exceptions to the law of supply. if the seller is in need of hard cash, he may sell his product at a price which may even be below the market price.

According to the law of conservation of mass, the mass of the reactant is equal to the mass of the product. An iron nail gains mass when it rust doesn’t mean that it does not follow the Law of conservation of mass. In order to analyze this further, let us draw the chemical equation of rust.

4Fe       + 3O2           + 6H2O →          4Fe(OH)3

223.2g  96 g  108 g  427.32g

The equation above, shows the chemical equation of rusting. Where Fe is the iron nail, H20 is water, O2 is oxygen gas and 4Fe(OH)3 is rust. The equation shows that iron nail, water and oxygen will create rust. If we are going to identify the molecular mass of each reactant we have 223.2 g of Fe, 96g of O2 and 108g of H2O and to sum this we have 427.32 g of reactants that is the same as the molecular weight of the product.

Thus when iron rust it increases weight because rust does not only contain iron but it also has an additional atom of Hydrogen and Oxygen that adds to its weight.

Iron + Oxygen gas + water = rust

This reaction proves that rust is not only composed of iron but also has oxygen and hydrogen atom. This explains the addition of the mass of iron when it rust. This also supports the law of conservation of mass which states that the mass of the product equals the mass of the reactants. In this case, the mass of the iron, oxygen, and hydrogen is equaled to the mass of the rust, as the rust is the product of the reaction.
