Alcohols are a group of organic compounds that contain a hydroxyl group, -OH, that is chemically bonded to a carbon atom in the compound. It means that alcohols have the same hydroxyl group as their functional group which is why they have some similar properties or characteristics. They have special uses such as a disinfectant, fuel, and as a main component (ethyl alcohol) of liquor and other alcoholic drinks.

Water and alcohols have similar properties because water molecules contain hydroxyl grouos that can form hydrogen bonds with other water molecules and with alcohol molecules, and likewise alcohol molecules can form hydrogen bonds with other alcohols molecules as well as with water.
